Markets enter a decisive week as investors prepare for the Federal Reserve interest rate decision, earnings reports from four technology giants and a series of important economic releases. Oil prices and geopolitical tensions will also remain central themes after another volatile period in global energy markets.
Oil completes a dramatic round trip.
Brent crude futures came close to breaking above $100 per barrel last week as the United States and Iran exchanged attacks and traffic through the Strait of Hormuz almost completely stopped.
The situation changed significantly earlier today, with Brent futures falling by more than 7% to approximately $91 per barrel. The decline followed a pause in US strikes over the weekend and the reopening of discussions with an Omani delegation regarding the possible restoration of maritime traffic through the strait.
The United States appears increasingly concerned about the economic consequences of a prolonged oil price surge. Higher energy costs could intensify inflationary pressure and create additional difficulties for the world’s largest economy.
However, risks remain elevated elsewhere in the region. Yemen’s Houthis have reportedly threatened maritime passage through the Strait of Bab el Mandeb. Any escalation near this strategically important gateway to the Red Sea could disrupt shipping routes and provide another catalyst for higher oil prices.
The Federal Reserve takes centre stage.
The Federal Open Market Committee decision is undoubtedly the most important market event of the month.
The general expectation is that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged within the current range of 3.5% to 3.75%, marking its fifth consecutive meeting without a change.
The recent energy price surge has nevertheless encouraged a more hawkish reassessment of the outlook. Money markets currently assign an estimated 35% probability to a 25 basis point rate increase this week, while a broader majority believes the Federal Reserve could be forced to tighten monetary policy by September.
There will be no updated dot plot at this meeting, meaning investors will not receive a visual indication of how individual policymakers expect interest rates to develop. As a result, markets will focus closely on every comment from Federal Reserve Chair Warsh for clues about inflation, economic growth and the future direction of monetary policy.
Four major technology companies report earnings.
Four members of the Magnificent Seven will publish their latest financial results within approximately 48 hours of the Federal Reserve decision.
Microsoft and Meta are scheduled to report on Wednesday, followed by Amazon and Apple on Thursday. Investors will closely examine their results for any indication that momentum among the largest technology companies is beginning to weaken.
The artificial intelligence driven rally has already shown signs of losing strength over the past month. Questions about the scale of capital expenditure and whether long term profits can justify current levels of investment have returned to the centre of the market debate.
Guidance on artificial intelligence spending, cloud growth, consumer demand and profit margins could therefore determine the broader direction of technology stocks.
Super Thursday brings further volatility.
Although the Federal Reserve will dominate attention, several other important announcements could generate considerable market volatility.
The Bank of England is expected to leave interest rates unchanged at 3.75%. A pause could help support the British pound as it continues to trade around the 1.33 level against the US dollar.
Attention will then return to the United States, where investors will receive the preliminary second quarter gross domestic product reading. The report should provide valuable information about the condition of the US economy and whether growth has remained resilient despite higher energy costs and restrictive monetary policy.
The June Core Personal Consumption Expenditures reading will also be closely monitored. As one of the Federal Reserve’s preferred measures of underlying inflation, the data could influence expectations for future interest rate decisions.
The Yen awaits the Bank of Japan.
The Bank of Japan will conclude the week with its latest monetary policy decision during Friday’s early Asian session.
Policymakers must decide whether to keep rates unchanged for another meeting or raise them in an attempt to support the weakened Yen, which remains close to its lowest levels in approximately 40 years.
Speculators continue to bet against the Japanese currency despite repeated warnings from government officials about the possibility of further intervention in foreign exchange markets.
However, official warnings and direct intervention may provide only temporary relief. A lasting change in the Yen’s direction is unlikely without a clearer and more substantial normalisation of monetary policy from the Bank of Japan.
