Possible leadership change at Leonardo raises market concerns

The Italian government is reportedly considering replacing Leonardo’s CEO, a move that could reshape leadership at one of Europe’s key defense groups.

The Italian government is reportedly evaluating a potential replacement for CEO Roberto Cingolani, signaling a possible shift in leadership at the state-controlled defense group. According to sources familiar with the matter, this decision could be part of a broader round of appointments across major government-linked companies.

The move would come at a sensitive time for Leonardo, which is actively competing for a growing number of contracts in the defense and aerospace sectors. Global military spending continues to rise, driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions such as the war in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East.

The Italian government holds just over 30% of Leonardo through the Ministry of Economy and is expected to present its list of board candidates by mid-April. Despite strong market performance with shares surging significantly since 2022 political pressure appears to be building for a change at the top, reportedly backed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Among the potential successors, Lorenzo Mariani has emerged as a leading candidate. He previously held senior roles within Leonardo and currently serves as CEO for Italy at MBDA, a joint venture involving Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo.

The leadership uncertainty has already impacted the market, with Leonardo’s shares experiencing a sharp decline following the reports. This reaction reflects investor sensitivity to governance changes, especially at a time when the company is pursuing major strategic initiatives.

Recently, Cingolani introduced a five-year plan focused on advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and next-generation defense systems. Under his leadership, the company has shifted toward digital innovation, moving beyond traditional defense manufacturing into more technology-driven solutions.

The potential transition now raises questions about continuity in strategy and the future direction of one of Europe’s key defense players.
